Boston is experiencing yet another building boom and the skyline is once again full of construction cranes. Construction sites offer great learning opportunities for everyone that passes by. The large excavations for these future buildings are impressive and it’s exciting to watch the steel go up into the sky. While all of this is taking place however, it’s worth slowing down to take a closer look, especially at the smaller scale mock-ups typically built on or near the construction sites.
Mock-ups of the building are a good opportunity for the owner, contractor, and architect to review a number of building conditions before it’s too late. They provide the design and construction teams with an opportunity to look closely at the exterior details where different materials come together; waterproofing and insulation details are reviewed and the design team and approval agencies can look at the finished appearance or how the sunlight will hit the building. These mock-ups are small design gems in the city that give us a hint of what the future will look like.
