BAC Commencement 2014

This past Friday I had the incredible opportunity to deliver the Boston Architectural College’s Commencement Address!  I am a 1992 Alumna of the BAC’s Interior Design Program, and the college has always been such an integral and important part of my career.  Since graduating I have stayed very connected through teaching, advising, mentoring, serving on the Board of Trustees and Overseers, and even as a designer, so this was a wonderful honor!

But when I was asked to deliver the address, my first reaction was shock and disbelief, followed by “I’m not worthy!”  Let’s face it – I’m no Jimmy Paige or President Obama, or many of the other notable celebrities who have given commencement addresses this year.  But then I realized that it was a true testament to the BAC to ask an alum to speak, not a celebrity, but someone who has been through the program, knows what it is like for the students, and can speak to what it is like on the other side.

So, my main message was a simple but important one – I told the students (and their families) that they made the right choice, about their profession, and about their education.  I spoke about the relevance, importance and appreciation of the contributions of designers of all disciplines, and the tremendous impact that we have on people with each and every design move we make.

I started my speech by taking a photo of the graduates – not as a gimmick, but because I wanted to be able to share with everyone what a wonderful experience it was to see the happiness, joy and excitement of the group,  (and their friends and families!) in this truly momentous time for them.  The infectious energy of students has always inspired me, and it certainly did so again this day.

It was especially great to share the day with one of STA’s team, Sarah Broadhead, who graduated with her Master of Architecture Degree!  Congratulations Sarah!!!  And, I’m proud to announce that I received my Master of Interior Design Degree!
