Falling (back) in love with Boston

It has been just about 6 months since STA moved our offices to the heart of Boston, and we couldn’t be happier in our new home and neighborhood! For me, the move to downtown has had a personal unexpected plus. As a native and lifelong resident of the Boston area (Cambridge, Boston, now Arlington), I grew up walking all over Boston, and knew the streets and neighborhoods well. For the last 10 years, the STA office has been in the Seaport / Innovation District, still in Boston, less than 2 miles away from our new office at 125 Broad, but just far enough away to feel separated from the heart. And what I did not realize was how disconnected from the city I had become. Even though I was often in downtown Boston for various reasons, it is very different to experience a city as a destination rather than from the inside.

Now, just about every day I have the chance to walk through the city – to a meeting, a site visit, or even an errand or lunch (the conveniences are another bonus of being downtown!). As we all are reacquainting ourselves with the city, we share and compare our various routes – “what’s the fastest way to 73 Tremont? PO Square to Milk to School, or Broad to State to Tremont?” What I’ve enjoyed the most is exploring different routes, and through this experience I find myself falling back in love with Boston!

I love the exciting and sometimes incongruous juxtaposition of old and new; the stunning integration of landscape into the urban fabric (thanks to Post Office Square and the Greenway); the welcoming portal and framed vistas of the waterfront thanks to Rowes Wharf; the diversity and richness of colors, textures and materials, and how they transform with the seasons and time of day; the surprise gems, like an outside bookstore in an alley; the incredible ornament and detail.

So I find myself adding a few extra minutes to my walking commutes to my meetings, to give myself the opportunity to explore and try to capture a few shots of the rich fabric of Boston. The photos here are just the beginning – I’ve created an album on the STA Facebook page called “STA loves Boston”, for all the team to contribute their own photos. Follow us!
